archives pictures
Colonial archive material on former metropolls (for ex. Belgian), and (history) museums in general. +1 but with conditions. Some materials is very violent.. is there a way to make the material available in ways that are cared for those who are affected? to avoid they are sensationalized? +1!
Adding to the person above me ^^ field recording from colonial expeditions. Highlighting them as ‘public domain’ is important but not through the framing of ethnomusicology, +1 which still reproduce the idea of a knowledge that was produced and collected in a distant past. The idea of ‘public domain’ should be understood as returning, how the knowledge can be reactivated, asking what memories do they evoke. + and how the past is always also in the present? Perhaps they can also be ‘manipulated’ by contemporary artist, reflecting and commenting on what should/should not be heard by a larger public. Jacqueline Nova - La creacion de la tierra
Public Domain Streaming
A controversial take: all cinema should be in the public domain. To get rid of malificent streaming services, a new platform to stream films is needed. How about those who create the films? How is their labor honored? compensated? This platform would be open source and work on a donation basis. It would be possible to watch a film for free, or to support the maker by giving a donation. No ads, no data stealing, just generosity.aha! :-) realistically they will have to rely on government funding which will infringe on artistic and political freedom For this platform to grow organically, commercial studio’s probably won’t put their films on there. It would start with smaller independent, low budget films. As there is no guaranteed income of the platform, the curation will be done by volunteers. This could be user-based curation or by assigned voluntary curators.
I think that news channels such as MSNBC and CNN should be part of the public domain. Ya you can read articles on their online platforms but to consume the news (on days where a major election is not occurring) you need an active subscription. We should be able to be informed without having to pay a monthly fee.
Everyone should be able to take art (anytype of art) classes for free. +1!

Record of every single time ICE made a mistake and deported people who were ‘’legal’’ american citizens, of the violence they perform on human beings daily, of the insane agressive methods they use. +1
Every single news media ever published. I did one cultural visual analysis class and it was really intersting to look back on different medias reporting on things and to access the advertisements in the papers side by side with things that were relevant to people back in the day. I was able to access some so they are in public domain to an extent but it would be interesting if they are more easily accessible and redily available.
HISTORIC CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH CINEMA CONSERVATION
The current system in the filmindustry is interesting were certain films get mandatorily put into public domain after a certain amount of years.
Currently it stands at 100 years but that could change. As long as we’re not impairing filmmakers to make profit from their films in the moment itself. It’s a way to help achieve full availablity and conservation for a lot of cuturlal heritage. But then again Piracy is kind of serving that purpose pretty well right now. Idk.

[10 min] Think of a work of art/design/literature/cultural artifact that resists becoming part of the public domain? Please describe it and reflect on why this might be the case.
Feminist Literature in School Programs > Misogyny
Several functions of apple: the brand makes it impossible to use their product with products from other brands, even things like videos get compressed into weird formats unreadable by other devices. If they would not resist to become part of the domain, we could all benefit from it, and we could make the brand more universal. +1 wouldn’t that go in the previous question?
Pamala Anderson’s sex tape. We have no business being able to watch that. +1
Any commercial - what do you mean?
sexual content🔞?
+1+1+1 ### But then, what is deemed sexual enough to be behind this barrier? <-> Also, there’s a lot of subtle voyeurism in advertisements, which are “less” sexual but still invasive and influence unwilling viewers.
The Inherent Author
Roland Barthes proclaimed the author dead. Does this
mean all works of art are in a kind of public domain? Perhaps not. Some
works are so inherently integrated with their maker that to take the
authorship away from it, would be to destroy the work. Think for example
of performance art. These are just things to think about rather than to
make decisions on as of now. Punctum Punctum Punctum Punctum

I think artworks with their own aura naturally resist public
distribution, things like performance art of other small scale
moment-based artforms. So if there would be this system of complete
public domain I could see some forms of this kinds of art not fiiting in
that idea. On a sepetate note I do think initiatives like
https://www.solidaritycinema.com/ show ways of natural selection that
can happen on these kinds of spaces. +1+1+1+1 -1 -1 -1 💯
I’m thinking about how the “aura” of performance arts exist in its ephemerality, I’m also thinking about instructional arts where such performance can be rendered into instructions that exists in the public domain +1 and be performed by other artists. In instances such as these maybe being reproduced and reused can add to the performativity of the work? That’s interesting, kind of like how Fluxus used to distribute their performances I think. Where every performance would be done by someone else. Still interesting how you would then control that when individual consumption will always be inpossible. As the individual moment and atmosphere is part of the art. And their cant be a space for the whole public

Anything by Damien Hirst, but on the other hand, it might be beneficial for people to see how disgusting ‘’wannabe artist’’he is. Hahahaha

[10 min] Formulate a few specific rules / conditions that would guide how one of the works previously mentioned, could be shared, circulated, or (re)published.

care is given to protect the survivors of the horrible acts. This would
ensure that they can maintain anonymity as they feel fit. conditions set

For the 3d Cad models of products, maybe the company can verify if you bought the product before you get the 3d model to repair? Then its not really on the public domain anymore, i guess. Honestly the only problem is other companies stealing your models or ideas, but they could do that without the 3d model. Another problem actually is people printing your products instead of buying, but thats just not efficient for them most of the time.
For sexual content <– don’t
Feminism > Include in school curricula
If they are materials from marginalized communities, when they are transformed/rendered or a part of a project that generates monetary value, maybe some of the earnings should be reserved for meaningful efforts /actions towards the communities.
Referencing opacity: most people assume credit is always necessary but maybe if it’s possible ask the author if they would like to be associated with this new way the work is distributed through.

[15 min] Possibility to reconsider: You can go back and edit your initial statement. Use the following markings as you revise:
Strikethroughto indicate parts you’d rather not make public or prefer to keep unreadable.
- Bold to highlight or emphasize what feels most
important.
- Italics to soften or downplay certain parts, or mark something as minor.
Move through your text and mark up sections accordingly. What should remain visible, what should fade, and what should stand out.
